EOS Utility works for me without any problems at all. I've recently upgraded to the same version as you and have 10.5.6 installed so I'd suggest you tried some troubleshooting - camera firmware, permissions, re-install or something - as EOS Utility doesn't seem to be faulty.
How many times did it work before freezing? I probably shot off 30 or 40 shots the other day with no problem.
Does the 450 connect with firewire (the 1Ds2 does) - I wonder if the problem stems from a USB incompatibility.
You may get some joy from photographic forums like dpreview as Canon's website is a near dead-end.
Best of luck with it!

Dec 19, 2014 The Canon EOS Utility is a camera-setting, owner ID, and live-tether utility. It is very specific for making changes to Canon cameras and has features that you cannot set from the EOS camera itself. It is not a RAW developer like Adobe's DNG converter, Photoshop RAW, or Lightroom. Nov 09, 2018 How do apple specialist not understand that when a new OS is first released it takes companies like Canon a while to make their apps compatible with an entirely new operating system. Canon is notoriously slow at updating their software, maybe 4 to 6 months before they even offer a new updated download for the EOS Utilities.
Thanks for the post in Apple Support Communities. It looks like you're seeing an issue when a camera is connected to your MacBook.
Are you able to use this app at all before the camera is connected? What port are you connecting the camera to on your MacBook?
Have you seen similar issues with any other devices connected to the MacBook?
Also, what exactly happens when you connect the camera? Does it give you an error message, stop responding, or something else?

While it might depend a bit on the answers to the above, there are some great steps here that will help If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly:- If the app is frozen and unresponsive, force quit the app (you may lose unsaved changes). Choose Apple menu > Force Quit, select the app in the dialog that appears, then click Force Quit.
- If the app quit, reopen it by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears.
- Restart your Mac by choosing Apple menu > Restart.
- Read the app’s documentation to see whether it’s compatible with your version of macOS.
- Open another file in the app. There may be a problem with the original file.
- Check for updates to your software.
- Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of macOS.
- Uninstall any app plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers. If you recently updated the app or macOS, a plug-in or enhancement you installed may no longer be compatible.
- Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These tools can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
- Restart your Mac in safe mode.
